Supply and distribution of quality water by the Ghana water company limited (GWCL) is poor and inadequate within the Tamale metropolitan city. With an erratic flow of water from GWCL coupled with the recent astronomical hike in water tariff, there is an exponential demand for alternative sources of quality drinking water. The safe community dam water project takes advantage of the many dams in Tamale as water resources to be treated and supplied as quality drinking water to communities.

The objectives are to increase access to treated water, to reduce and subsequently eliminate water-borne diseases, to promote the continuous flow of quality water from community dams.

The need to undertake this intervention is to develop a low-cost, small-scale treatment system for community dams to provide a cheaper, healthier and reliable source of quality safe drinking water for happy healthy communities.

Plan to implement idea

The project would be in two phases.

1st Part: Development of a Dam water treatment plant system

2nd Part: Piloting of treatment plant in the main SCDW project
